Fire in the Hole (The Plundered Chronicles Book 3) Page 25
Quinn sat up and listened.
“Coming from the east,” Bronwen said, arming herself with a staff.
Quinn grabbed her sword and moved behind a tree, where she waited.
The horse clopped along slowly through the underbrush. When the rider saw the fire, he slid off and started toward their tents.
Before he could pull his sword out, Quinn tackled him from behind, pulled her fist back, and was preparing to hit him square in the face when she recognized him.
“Fitz? What in the hell are you doing here?”
From the ground, still on his back, he blurted out, “That English governor has imprisoned Grace’s youngest son, Tibbott, fer treason and arrested her half brother Donal fer murder. Captain O’Malley is plannin’ on sailin’ up the Thames to confront the Queen about it.”
“Wait. Slow down. Surely you don’t mean Grace is going to sail through England for an audience with a queen she’s been looting from for years?”
“Aye, Callaghan. That is exactly what I am sayin.’ She plans on takin’ the ship and the crew into England to see that bitch Elizabeth, aye. The Captain has lost her mind!”
In that score, Quinn could not disagree. “She’ll never make it. They’ll sink the ship, kill the crew, and imprison Grace to make an example out of her.”
“Not unless ya can stop her. Captain O’Malley needs ya, Callaghan, and she needs ya now.”
Quinn nodded. “Then right now it is.”
“If ennaone can stop her, Callaghan, it’s ya.”
Funny thing was, Quinn wasn’t so sure that was true any more. “I don’t know, Fitz. I’ve been gone so long and–”
“And she needs ya, Callaghan. Now more that ever. If ya can’t come back fer Grace, come back fer the crew ya used to call yer family.”
Quinn studied her friend a few moments before nodding. The crew had been her family for half a decade. If they needed her to save them from Grace’s bad decision to confront the English queen, then so be it.
“Then we leave at daybreak.”
When Fitz threw his arms around her and hugged her, Quinn knew beyond a shadow of the doubt that she was making the right decision.
It was time to go home.
Home to her mistress, the sea.
